Lets set some positive intentions for the New Year by using the last day of the old year to reflect, and self-reflect. All morning classes are planned, also January first, but please give a 24 notice if you have the intention to join the class. Friday 4th of January no morning class.

The Tuesday and Wednesday evening classes are cancelled and will be back next week.
The 200hr yoga teacher training has started and a few more classes have been added to the schedule, for the most the schedule is as it was in 2018.

The early morning weekday classes (@Uma Dame and Wednesday at @Ocean View)have as focus the self practice of yoga and lean towards the Mysore style of teaching.

The weekend early morning classes at Ocean View are an extended variation of these classes in Led style.

The Thursday evening 6 p.m. class is Ashtanga vinyasa yoga primary series for anyone that cannot make it to any of the morning classes . It is a Led style though can move towards Mysore style during the coming months.

Interested in practicing Mysore but not sure enough to bring it to class, I m available for private sessions too.

The Saturday 9 a.m. morning class @Ocean View is the best class to (re)start your yoga practice or to experience an all around balanced hatha yoga class.

Sunday 9 a.m. morning class @Ocean View and Tuesday 6.15 p.m. evening class @U.N.D.P. give a complete practice too.

The weekend afternoon special classes are both for beginners and the more experienced practitioner. It is about the interest to move deeper into a certain area of the yoga practice, let it be hips, core strength, focus, meditation and back bend. @Uma iis Tasi.

Before, no After Yoga

There is a BEFORE yoga , 
there isn’t an AFTER
or to quote one of my first and maybe most inspiring yoga teachers Kathy Elder “yoga has a beginning, it doesn’t have an end”. I knew she was right, but how right, how much truth about the practice she confined in that sentence, I think I’m still in the beginning to grasp that truth. (If it can be grasped at all)
Yoga isn’t about being flexible , it is not even about becoming flexible, it is about removing the limitations of tightness and weakness, anger and fear, delusion and ignorance .
The journey of yoga, an inward journey, is a never-ending journey without any final destination. Its a process. A process of self-realisation and self-exploration. Inquiry and investigation, together with discipline and wonderment.
Yoga (Especially the Ashthanga sequences and method) is a system, call it a science, and because of that we can see results. Not that it is about results, but we need results to move onwards.
How to measure yoga? That is only what you can do for yourself, and that is one (and maybe the only) thing the yoga practice is about; that internal communication with your Self. But we like something concrete, something our ego, and with that our third chakra, can relate to. We want visual facts. For the practitioner often the question rises of “how long?” How long before I can catch my toes? Have my legs behind the head? Lift up and float to chaturanga? And when can catch my heels? There isn’t an answer, as everyone is different, and we have to honor that. But here are my facts.
I never started yoga because I was flexible, neither because I was strong and stuff like handstand was easy. No, my BEFORE yoga was a super tight body, couldn’t reach my toes with straight legs, and all that stuff like handstands, lotus, back drops, cartwheels and legs behind the head was somethings I couldn’t do, I never did, not even as a child and didn’t know it was possible. If I had seen it before, I was sure you had to be female, Russian, or at least eastern European , and under 12 years old.
That I started yoga, was a mere coincidence (if there is something like coincidence), when a colleague invited me to a a yoga class at the gym. But I did felt the benefits from that first session, and that kept me going on the journey.
And I never started teaching teaching because I was flexible, or that it came easy to me. Even after my YTT I still had so much mobility and body awareness to ‘gain’.
And that journey is ongoing.
To put it on a timeline ;
After a about a year of doing about 3 yoga classes every day I was able to reach my toes in a sitting forward bend.
After about 6 months of doing 3 yoga classes every day, I got introduced to the Ashthanga primary series. I didn’t know anything about it, and I didn’t know that there were more sequences to come, I never heard about jump back vinyasa, floating, kapotanasana or back drop .
I have to say; yoga changed my life, Ashthanga changed my yoga.
After 3 months of Ashthanga I was doing half lotus, and attempting full lotus. Marichyasana D was getting there, and the chest was moving down towards the floor in upavistha konasana. Back bending would be more challenging and slower journey .
These are the BEFORE (after 1 year of daily Ashthanga primary series practice, and 1.5 year of a daily intense yoga asana practice, I just started to manage drop back, coming up was a definitely “not yet”, and I just started practicing at KPJAYI) and AFTER, exactly 5 years later.
The video I shot on my old note book, I can not open anymore on my tablet . And I had to use another ancient laptop to play the out of date video format and record it with my phone.

And the spine can change, the body can change, that are the concrete visual results.
5 years of practice, often it felt I hardly moved half a millimeter at a stretch or not at all. And its all in progress, it is still moving, changing and it will never stop. Its a story, it is a journey. So if you are tight, if you are stiff, if you feel like you cannot move at all. Take that journey, and it will lead you somewhere, step by little step, breathe by a deeper breathe. Let the asana become a story of journey. And being stiff that journey will be probably more colourful and meaningful. To end with a quote of Iyengar; “natural flexibility is the greatest enemy of yoga “.

Opening into an inward practice (the self-practice of yoga)

An offering of various classes of yoga for developing your own yoga practice. The separate classes are the “LEGO” pieces of the yoga practice training (YPT) workshop which, when combined together into a workshop, can build a full and (w)holistic practice. Every class is a foundation on it is own, and will explore a part (or parts) of yoga in depth. Doing a workshop will give you broader access to the (self) practice of yoga, while attending one of classes will deepen your understanding. We need both, an overall view and more in-depth insight.

Asthanga Vinyasa primary orientated :
The Ashtanga sequences* are used as a source of inspiration, in a not dogmatic but rather pragmatic style. The primary sequence has focus on both strengthening and lengthening, creating a more open and flexible body that is equally strong and flexible. Developing harmony between the various body parts, and balancing the body with the mind.

Saturday 17 – Thursday 22 December, 07:00-09.00
Ashthanga vinyasa orientated class will move from the guided, classic “western” type of teaching, (Led class where the teacher is guiding the class as a group and showing the poses of the sequence, the variations and modifications) to the more Mysore style approach during the week. The class is to be received in a playful way, trying, exploring, not expecting, and learning what is suitable for you and where you can take yourself. Take it as exploration and with the focus of establishing, or fine-tuning, your own yoga practice.
*The ashtanga practice is definitely a more strenuous practice, and meant to be a purifying practice, the first guide line is always to work within the limits of your own body. Learning to listing to your own body (and breath). From there we explore these limits, taking them as frontiers rather than limitations, and going beyond the set expectations you maybe have of your body and mind. Making Self-expression part of the whole. (Please come to practice with an empty stomach)
Special classes in back bending, vinyasa techniques, hip opening & arm balances:
These classes are more of a workshop style class, which target specific parts of the body and mind and go deeper in some of the hatha/ashtanga yoga technique. Within the class there is more time for practicing the techniques by means of repetition and trial & error. It are also the areas we all have to work on if we want to progress deeper into our yoga practice. It is here that we have to fine tune the balance between strength and flexibility, control and surrender, action and non-action. Elements of these special classes will be brought back into the morning Ashthanga classes to give more opportunity to practice.

Back bending; often it is not the spine that is stiff, but tightness in the hips, shoulders, hamstrings or abdomen that is preventing the spine to open up and finding its natural length and space. More over, the most limiting factor could be the mind, back bending can come together with fear and anxiety, or the opposite, no strength and no control. Especially with back bending we can say; “asana are being done by the body, but work on the mind”.

Vinyasa technics; brings it all together and without persistent practice we are not able to master it. It is here that we can create an unlimited variety of how to move in and out of poses, to play with both the lunar and solar energy and let them dance together. It has to become natural, and often it will seem magical, it is were we can see Maya (illusion) demonstrated when gravity seems defied. Especially in these classes it is a lot of trial & error, that is how we learn, plus keeping a playful attitude.

Monday 19 December 2016, 09.00-12.00 & Thursday 22 December 2016, 11.00-13.00

Hip opening & arm balances; open hips facilitate smooth Vinyasa, and is often the most frustrating part of our yoga practice. It seems also the storage of long lasting deep embedded “karma” are all in the hips. Lots of asana for opening the hips, and from there in, using the regained mobility to explore the more advanced asana of arm balances and related asana.
Yin-yoga for Ashtangi’s, pratayahara & meditation:
Saturday 17-Thursday 22 December 2016, 16:00-17.30
While in the “asana” during these yin (sense-withdrawal) classes, different facets of the 8th limbs of yoga are being presented. Sense-withdrawal (Sanskrit; pratyahara) is step 5 of the 8 folded path, and brings the “outer” disciplines together with the “inner” disciplines. Foundation of the class is active relaxation of the physical body with as focus to quiet the mind, which is often the most challenging and difficult part of our yoga practice. Various techniques will be explored. During a long hold pose (3 to 5 min.), these different tools are offered and practiced. As we all have different bodies, our minds are as different as well and we need different techniques for different situations. The slow and passive stretching together with the active relaxation helps to recharge the body and mind, and expels the waste products of metabolism* from an intensive (yang) yoga practice efficiently, minimizing soreness the next day. These classes are an important part of the workshop as to understand the yoga practice and are designed to compliment the morning Ashthanga practice. It is here we practice to move to the final step of yoga; “Samadhi”, realizing peace.
*These classes can have a strong cleansing effect on the body. Please drink plenty of water afterwards. Q&A Sessions:

Before the pratyahara/yin classes, on 3 days there will be approximately 60 minute Q&A sessions for students who take the class as part of the yoga practice training (TPT) workshop. These classes are meant to tune the workshop to individual needs, and can go from anything yoga related, into Ayurveda, diet, and lifestyle. The key ingredient is how to integrate the yoga practice into your daily life, and bring your life into the sphere of yoga.
